Screw Certainty

Yes, I said it.

Now, of all the topics I could write about, why this one?

Well, here’s why:

The problem with certainty, you see, is that there’s so little of it.

In fact, the only thing we can be truly certain of is that nothing is certain: our plans can fall apart, our expectations can be shattered, and our assumptions can be proven wrong.

And yet, despite the clear lack of certainty in our lives, many of us still strive for it. Often at a cost to our wellbeing. We try to control every outcome, predict every event, and eliminate every risk. It can make us rigid and inflexible, unable to adapt to changing circumstances. It can leave us feeling anxious and fearful, worried about what might go wrong. And it can make us miss out on opportunities and experiences that might otherwise have brought us growth, joy, and fulfillment. Requiring more certitude than is possible comes with a significant cost to our wellbeing.

So, what’s the alternative? How can we learn to get better at living with uncertainty, rather than trying to eliminate it? How can we let go of at least some of our need to control the things in life that simply can’t be controlled? (This, by the way, is just about the number 1 thing most clients in my practice like the least … until they begin to experience the benefits of practicing it.) I wanted to say a word about why embracing uncertainty might be the key to a more fulfilling, more meaningful, and more vibrant life.

Contrary to what many people think, uncertainty is not something to be feared or avoided. It’s a natural part of life, and it’s often the catalyst for growth, innovation, and transformation.

Think about it. When was the last time you did something that was out-of-the ordinary, unplanned, unanticipated, and perhaps even unwelcomed but the outcome was remarkable or life-changing? Was it when you were living a routine life, following a predictable plan, or was it when life threw you a curveball or you took a risk and stepped into the unknown?

I suspect it was the latter. Even if you do everything in your power to dodge it, uncertainty has a way of showing up. But it also has a way of awakening our senses, sparking our creativity, and pushing us to become more than we thought we could be ~ as long as we don’t get too stubborn in refusing to yield to some of life’s own terms.

So, how can we cultivate this kind of uncertainty in our lives? How can we learn to lean into the unknown, rather than trying to control or avoid it?

Here are a few strategies that might help:

Practice mindfulness:  Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, without judgment or attachment. It’s a powerful way to cultivate uncertainty, because it allows us to begin to let go of our need for control and prediction.

Take calculated risks: Taking risks can be scary, but it’s also a great way to build confidence and develop a sense of uncertainty. Start small, wherever you feel safe, and where the stakes are not too high, take a calculated risk, and see what happens.

Reframe uncertainty as opportunity: Instead of seeing uncertainty as a threat, try to reframe it as an opportunity. Ask yourself, what could I learn from this experience? What could I gain?

By incorporating these strategies into our lives, you can begin to cultivate a sense of uncertainty that is more liberating and empowering. You begin to understand that uncertainty sometimes – oftentimes – comes bearing gifts.

So, the next time you’re faced with uncertainty, remember that it’s not something to be feared or avoided. It’s an opportunity for growth, innovation, and transformation. Embrace it, lean into it, and see where it takes you.
